Tang Band W81772 Audio Autonomy
Tang Band W8-1772 is maybe the best value-for-money performer in current production. It is very well tonal balanced and it can play really loud. The only drawback I can remark is a slight lack of details in a very low volume. It is compatible with most of tube amplifier constructions.

External dimensions 37.5" tall, by 15.5" wide, by 11.75" deep. The walls are 3/4" thick plywood and the vent centerline is 8 inches off of the bottom. The vent is 4" diameter and 4" long. There are two window braces in the cabinet for reinforcement. The L-Pad approach is a great way to experiment with the treble level.

About 7 years ago, a group of us did a direct listening comparison of the 1808 and the 1772, both just mounted in a simple open baffle. Out of a 5 member panel, 3 preferred the 1808, mostly because it had a bit more sense of bass, but 2 of us (obviously one of the 2 was me) preferred the 1772 due to it's favorable tone.

"HAK8" (High Aspect Karlson) with Tangband W8-1772 - very low paying levels due to my Zoom Q3 being easily overloaded in the softer setting. It plays prett.

I have decided to use Tang Band W8-1772 drivers after doing a fare amount of reading and research, and also considering my goals and expectations from the build (e.g. good and clean bass and ability to play fairly loud with various genre of music including regular rock music)

The Tang Band W8-1772 is a very high performance FR driver. Mine go low, into the 30's, with great mid-range and a strong treble. You will most likely have to assemble a BSC (Baffle Step Compensation) circuit to compensate for the strong treble. The calculator is on this site. I've seen many different materials used for speaker enclosures.

ANY sized driver will roll off at exactly the same frequency (assuming that the driver will reach that frequency). As good as the 1772/1808 may be, a 3-4in driver is going to have a better top end. Use an 8" driver in a cabinet that will allow it to get some bass. Bob. R.
